Navigating Construction on Route 30 through Frankfort

Driving through Frankfort on Route 30 is especially tricky at Hackberry Road and Route 30.

Driving Route 30 through Frankfort takes patience and demands extra attention these days.  As the Route 30 Construction Project continues this summer, motorists are cautioned to be aware of regular changes in traffic patterns.

Village trustees, Cynthia Corso Heath and Doug Walker, described problems they've witnessed at the intersection of Route 30 and Hackberry Road. During the regular Monday Village Board meeting, the two expressed their concerns to Village Administrator Jerry Ducay.

Walker said he saw an accident at the intersection on his way to the meeting, and Heath complained that the temporary adjustments made by the contractor for the Illinois Department of Transportation were faulty.

"They've created a blind spot," she said. It's difficult to turn at the intersection.

Ducay said he has contacted IDOT to correct the matter.

Route 30 Construction Updates:

Rob Piscia, assistant village administrator, highlighted the Route 30 west contract between Wolf and Route 45:

  • One lane open in each direction
  • Curb and median work still needs to be completed

He said crews are working on traffic signals at Locust Street.  They should be turned on June 26. Meanwhile, noise-wall installation continues from Elm Street to Locust Street.  Removal of temporary pavement in front of Philips Chevrolet is underway and a mountable median will be replaced.

  • Landscaping installation along the roadway and median.

He warned that no left turns will be allowed at the intersection of Elsner and Hackberry Roads. These measures are necessary to complete the intersection and medians.

Beginning June 20, removal of temporary pavement gets underway.

The east contract between Route 45 and Harlem Avenue:

  •  One lane opens in each direction
  •  Curb and median work still needs to be completed.
  • Landscape work in the medians will continue.

Mayor Jim Holland said the work along Route 45 is set to begin next month. The village has approved the addition of a right turn lane at Market Street.

Piscia further noted the installation of a new right turn lane, southbound on Route 45 for westbound Route 30, is planned. "The work on underground utilities has begun outside of the state right of way. We will notify residents as the work progresses. Please pay attention to signage for possible lane closures," he said.

Also, expect delays while the Will County Highway Department continues its resurfacing on Layaway Road between Harlem to Route 52 in Joliet.

  • Center Road at CN Railroad remains closed to June 21 for repairs to pavement next to the tracks
