Letter to the Editor: Village Did Right Thing by Renovating Downtown Buildings

Frankfort Preservation Foundation praises officials for making improvements on three historical Kansas Street structures.

is to be commended for obtaining a court order . While these holdings are private property, they are, nonetheless, architecturally and historically significant to the Village of Frankfort.

While the Village is limited by law from interfering with such private property, the Village acted as best it could to protect public safety and preserve these buildings. Sadly, the owners have neglected the buildings, which present a physical reminder of the architecture of 19th-century Frankfort, a reality few present-day communities possess. For example, the bank building, a classic rendering of Midwest vernacular architecture, reflects the strength of the Frankfort community with its thick masonry and strong sense of purpose.

These are community structures to be treasured and preserved. Perhaps the owners will be inspired to invest in the preservation of these historic properties or find an entity willing to invest in their preservation for the future of Frankfort.
