One of the areas that trustees also will be looking at during this time is the amount of businesses selling tobacco products in the village, be they tobacco shops, convenience stores or other outlets. Trustee Mike Stevens said at last Monday's meeting that Frankfort currently has 16 to 18 stores that sell cigarettes and other tobacco products, and Village Administartor Jerry Ducay said the village has seen an increase in applications for new licenses.
A reason why Frankfort is an attractive spot for tobacco retailers is that it's close to Cook County but with all of Will County's lower taxes.
But does the village have enough places for residents to stock up on cigarettes, cigars and other smoking items? Should the village limit the amount of outlets by putting a cap on the number of available tobacco-sales licenses? Or given the demand, should officials approve all qualified businesses to help boost local sale tax income?
