Detour Ahead: Elsner-Rt. 30 Intersection to Close Aug. 20

The closing, which will last about 28 days, comes as part of the U.S. Route 30 widening project, a village official said.

In order to totally reconstruct the roadway as part of the U.S. Route 30 widening project, the Illinois Department of Transportation will be closing the intersection at Elsner Road Rt. 30 for about 28 days beginning Aug. 20, a village official said.

The road work will connect Elsner with the new Rt. 30 lanes, and residents are being advised to use Nebraska Street to LaGrange Road as a detour, said Assistant Village Administrator Rob Piscia.

"It's basically tearing up the pavement to tie everything in with the curbs and gutters," he said.

The timing of the intersection closing is problematic, to say the least. starts its school year Thursday, Aug. 16, and the schools in begin Tuesday, Aug. 21. Although closing the Elsner Road intersection was in IDOT's Rt. 30 plans, the village wasn't told about when it would happen until last Thursday, Piscia said. The school districts, along with the and , have been alerted to the closure so they can adjust their travel routes, he added.

Other intersections along Rt. 30 that might be closed for reconstruction in the future are Hackberry Road and Locust Street, Piscia said, adding that the time those intersections would be closed would probably be shorter.

IDOT still says the projected completion date for the major road work on the Rt. 30 project will be Sept. 30, but Piscia is skeptical about that timeline.
