My priority has always been what is best for our students. We must have a rigorous curriculum with an emphasis on the Common Core Standards. They must also have opportunities for enrichment through a variety of extra-curricular activities. Their time in Summit Hill School District 161 should prepare them for the future and assist them in becoming productive members of society. Finally, their safety must always be a priority both inside and outside of the classroom.

Why are you seeking office?

Upon retiring as a teacher and administrator from Summit Hill School District 161, I continue to feel the need to contribute within our school community. As a potential school board member I look to put our students' education and safety first while remaining fiscally responsible. I believe my experiences (teacher, contract negotiator, administrator, and community board service) give me a solid working knowledge of our school district. In addition, I feel working closely and communicating with the community will be key in maximizing support of our educational system.

What sets you apart from the other candidates?

What sets me apart from the other candidates is my background as an educator and administrator. In addition, I have been a part of contract negotiations and also have board experience within our community. I have managed a school budget and a staff while serving as a building principal.

In your opinion, what are the primary challenges facing this district?

At this time, I believe the largest challenge facing not only our district, but many districts within the state of Illinois, is the limited financial support from the state. We need to find ways to subsidize programs and enhance the quality of education within our district. Our teachers need professional development in order to stay current with the demands at the state level. That will, in turn, better prepare our students in meeting and exceeding the state standard requirements.

How will you address those challenges?

I will address those challenges by examining the budget, looking for areas that can be tightened or possibly eliminated in order to enhance student achievement and safety. While resouces are limited at the state level, we must find ways to keep a quality education within our community. I also believe our community members are a valuable resource, many with experiences that can be shared. Our students achieve more when the school district and community work together toward their success.

If elected, what will be your philosophy as a board member?

As an elected official, I believe we serve in that position to represent the community. Therefore, my philosophy is to network with our community in support of education whenever possible. I am aware that this is not always possible, based on the nature of some of the decisions or areas not suitable for public input. Again, doing what is best for kids will always be what guides my decisions.

Please add any other information pertinent to your campaign.

We have put together a slate of three for this election. In addition to myself, I support Richard Marron and David Faber. Together, we have the proper balance of experiences in finance, accounting, management, administration, contract negotiations, and education. We are committed to Building a Better 161.
