Money-stuffed Envelopes Disappear After Visit From Suspicious Man

A 73-year-old man in the 23000 block of South Dutch Drive reported a home robbery to the sheriff's office. At about 3 p.m., a man knocked on his front door and said a nearby neighbor had hired the visitor's company to trim trees on the back of his property, according to the report. The man asked the victim to show him where the property lines met in the back yard, and the victim let the man in his house and went to the back yard with him. According to the report, the man became nervous when the victim asked for a business card, and he picked up his cell phone and began speaking Spanish while walking quickly to the front of the house. The man then got in to a newer gray SUV-type vehicle with a possible Illinois temporary tag and drove off. Later, the victim told police envelopes with an unspecified amount of money were missing from his bedroom. The victim described the man as about 40 to 50 years old, round-faced, between 5-feet, 7-inches and 5-feet, 10 inches tall, between 250 and 270 pounds, the report said. The man also was wearing a brown baseball cap, a medium-brown Carhartt-type jacket and medium-brown pants, according to the sheriff's report.
