Mokena Man Arrested After Escape Try During Pat Down

Raymond Gonzalez, 25, was charged with resisting a peace officer and possession of drug equipment after Will County Sheriff's deputies found a syringe and other items on him during a traffic stop.

A Mokena man was arrested when he tried to flee on foot from deputies after they found drug paraphernalia on his person during a traffic stop Thursday, June 14, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.

Raymond Gonzalez, 25, of the 9500 block of Willow Lane in Mokena, was charged with possession of drug equipment and resisting a peace officer, the sheriff's report stated. Gonzalez was booked in to Will County Jail and was released on $100 bond, said sheriff's office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer.

Deputies stopped the car Gonzalez was riding in around 10:30 p.m. June 14 in the Arbury Hills subdivision, near the intersection of South Poplar Street, Hoffmeyer said. Officers said they saw the car, which was being driven by Gonzalez's mother, roll through a stop sign at Willow Lane and Walnut Street, she added.

The deputies noticed that Gonzalez and his mom were both acting nervous and anxious, Hoffmeyer said. Gonzalez was asked to get out of the car, and then one of the officers began to pat him down, she said. During the pat down, the deputy felt something in Gonzalez's pocket. That's when he tried to escape, but the officers were able to stop him before he got away, Hoffmeyer said.

Once subdued, the deputies found a syringe and a "heater"—an object that holds drugs so they can be heated up by an external source—on Gonzalez, Hoffmeyer said.

Gonzalez was then brought to Will County Jail. His mother was not charged, Hoffmeyer said.
