Bus Routes Canceled Due to Police Investigation

The police investigation of a Brookside Glen fatality left many District 161 students stuck at school. Parents received calls from the district to pick up their children.

Several bus routes in Summit Hill School District 161 did not run Wednesday afternoon due to a police investigation of a reported fatality in the Brookside Glen neighborhood in Tinley Park.

Eight buses with stops in Brookside Glen were canceled, said D161 Superintendent Barb Rains.

Rains said the cancellations were made because police barricades would have interfered with the ability of the buses to make scheduled stops. Rains said the district didn’t want to risk dropping students in unfamiliar areas.

“We wanted to keep our students as safe as possible,” said Rains.

Students were kept at school until they could be picked up. All district parents received an email about the cancellations and parents whose children were affected also received a personal phone call.

The cancelled routes serve students who attend Dr. Julian Rogus Elementary School, Hilda Walker Intermediate School and Summit Hill Junior High School.

As a result of the police investigation, Silverside Drive is not accessible between Brookpoint Court and Monaghan Drive, Rains said. Brookside Glen Drive is also closed, between Glenshire Street and Meadow Edge Trail.

As soon as the investigation is complete, standard bus routes will resume.

The road closures are the result of what is being reported as “a domestic case” that occurred on Wednesday. One woman is dead and another person is in custody.

The house where the incident took place is on the 19700 block of Silverside Drive. Police received a call to the location at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Village officials say that the situation does not pose any danger to the community.
