“One Book/One School” at Chelsea Intermediate School

Administrators and staff at Chelsea Intermediate School have initiated the “One Book/One School” program where all students and staff are reading “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” at the same time. The 1964 children’s book by British author Roald Dahl is about the adventures of young Charlie Bucket inside the chocolate factory of Willy Wonka.  The Family School Partnership (FSP) organization funded additional books by the same author so that teachers could conduct an author study in their class.

A number of programs were planned for students for the event kick-off on October 31.  Halloween was a natural fit as a start date for the program, with staff members dressing up as different characters from the book to inspire student excitement about reading the story.

Numerous displays depicting scenes from the book were set up around the school for students to experience the story’s setting.  Special recognition goes to teachers Linda Newman and Traci Ulanowski for their hard work in decorating and arranging for activities to align with the theme.

Also on October 31, author and Bluestem 2013-2014 nominee Steve Cotler conducted several assemblies throughout the day sponsored by the FSP.  In addition, Halloween parties took place in the classrooms and Frankfort Police Officer Leanne Bender presented Halloween safety assemblies for the students. The students learned safety tips while playing a special Halloween version of the game show, Jeopardy.

The "One Book/One School" effort will continue through January 11, 2014 with a culminating Exploration Night sponsored by the FSP. This final event will also feature the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory theme.
