Hickory Creek physical education "takeover"

Hickory Creek Middle School students will be participating in a physical education “takeover” sponsored by the Lincolnway Special Recreation Association (LWSRA) on December 19th. Throughout the school day, Hickory Creek will be “taken over” in all the physical education classes.  LWSRA staff will speak to classes about what it is like to live with a disability and students will participate in wheelchair basketball and other adaptive sports.

According to information on their website, www.lwsra.org, LWSRA recognizes the importance of understanding and accepting people with disabilities. Through education, training and hands-on experience, they hope to extend this knowledge to everyone. Assemblies, training and "takeover" days allow LWSRA to reach out to youth, teens and adults in the community in order to build a better understanding and acceptance of those with physical or developmental disabilities.

Through these programs, students learn the limitations and freedoms that athletes experience while competing. Sports include wheelchair basketball, sit volleyball and goal ball (visually impaired). Students will use wheelchairs and other equipment to experience the sport the way a person with a disability might experience it.
