Grand Prairie students read books to see administrators taped to wall

A new reading incentive began on March 10 at Grand Prairie Elementary School.  The all-school read is intended to get students excited about their reading.

Students are being encouraged to reach an all-school goal of 4,300 reading minutes.  The book being read this year is “Frindle” by Andrew Clements.  Guest readers from the school and community got the program off to a great start by reading the first chapter of the book to children gathered in small groups.

Community guest readers included Frankfort Mayor Jim Holland, Frankfort Library representative Sandy Anderson, Frankfort Police Chief John Burica, and Frankfort Fire Department firefighters Joe O’Dette and Denis Merz. School readers included Interim Superintendent Dr. Patricia A. Wernet, Chelsea Intermediate School Principal Kristin Simpkins, Director of Curriculum & Instruction Janet Goggins, technology teacher Barb Campbell and Reading Recovery teacher Lindsay Reipsa.

If students complete the 4,300 minutes of reading, Principal Mrs. Eileen Nelson and Mrs. Sharon Nepote have promised to allow the students to duck tape them to the wall on April 17 while they read the final chapter of the story.  Each class will be given a piece of duck tape and will have an opportunity to tape them to the wall. The duck tape is to show everyone that the students are “stuck on reading” after the successful reading incentive.

Last year’s reading incentive was successful in getting Mrs. Nelson to kiss a pig as her promise to the students for completing the required number of minutes of reading.
