Grand Prairie students collect pop top tabs for Ronald McDonald House

Grand Prairie Elementary School kindergarten, first and second grade students collected 105 lbs. of pop top tabs to benefit the Ronald McDonald House.  The students have been collecting them since the beginning of the school year.

The Ronald McDonald House encourages the collection of pop top tabs to raise funds and teach kids about philanthropy and the importance of recycling. Some Ronald McDonald House Charities Chapters raise thousands of dollars with this program. According to their website, Ronald McDonald Houses collect pop tabs instead of entire aluminum cans because it's more hygienic to store tabs than cans, and collection and storage is easier.  They say that the program is an easy way for people of all ages to support the Ronald McDonald House Charities and know they are making a difference for families and children. After the tabs are collected, the local Ronald McDonald House Charities Chapter brings the collection to local recycling centers, where they are weighed to determine their value.  The recycling center then sends the local Chapter a check for the total value.

Physical Education Instructor Richard Innocenti stated, “We are grateful to the community of Frankfort for being so generous in helping the students with this project.”  Mr. Innocenti will bring the donation of pop top tabs to the Ronald McDonald House in Oak Lawn on behalf of the school.
