District 157-C Education Foundation sponsors coin drive to enrich education

Students at Grand Prairie Elementary, Chelsea Intermediate and Hickory Creek Middle School will compete in a district-wide coin drive from October 15-25.  Sponsored by the District 157-C Education Foundation, the students will drop coins into banks in their classrooms each day to compete for the highest dollar amount.  At the end of the effort, the winning class at each school will be rewarded with a class prize or privilege. The coin drive will promote philanthropy and learning about the value of money, while also enriching education through Foundation grants for the classrooms.

Community members are also invited to invest in the children through participation in the coin drive.  On Friday, October 18, and Saturday, October 19, volunteers will be collecting coins from 8:00 AM until 6:00 PM at the following intersections in Frankfort:  Laraway Road and Center Road; Colorado Avenue and US 45; Nebraska Street; and US 45, Nebraska Street and White Street.  Any spare change is welcome and community support is greatly appreciated.  In addition, restaurants Smokey Barque & Durbin's have generously offered to donate 10 percent of total bills toward the Foundation on October 18 and 19 when diners mention the fundraiser.

The Education Foundation has a long history of raising funds to fulfill teacher-written grants for projects and materials in the areas of art, literature, technology, math, music, physical education, science, social studies and character-building programs.  Last fall the Foundation awarded $49,978 in grants to the schools to enhance education.  Some of these grants provided SMARTboards, computer tablets, netbooks, Rebecca Caudill, Monarch and Bluestem books, electronic signage and physical education equipment.
