Calling All Veterans!

Frankfort School District 157-C students will again honor veterans through various special Veterans Day programs on Monday, November 11.  Local community veterans are welcome and invited to attend the events at all schools. 

 

The Hickory Creek Middle School band will host its annual Fall Band Showcase and Fundraiser at 6:30 PM at the school at 22150 116th Avenue in Frankfort.  The free concert will feature performances by the Tiger Band and Jazz Band. The Veteran’s Day Observation will be presented at 7:00 PM by the Tiger Band in cooperation with the Village of Frankfort and Mayor Jim Holland.  The program will include a color guard presentation, patriotic songs and recognition of local veterans in attendance.  The Band Booster organization will offer coffee and desserts for purchase with all proceeds to benefit the band program.  All veterans will receive a complimentary boutonniere and refreshments and they are asked to RSVP in advance to rachel@thegilmoregirl.com.

Hickory Creek Middle School seventh grade students will hold a special Veterans Day observance at 8:00 – 9:30 AM at the school at 22150 116th Avenue.  Veterans from the community are welcome to join the students as they listen to guest speakers.  The students will acknowledge the veterans to thank them for their service and invite them to join them for a photo following the ceremony. Students have been competing to raise money for Honor Flight Chicago, a not-for-profit organization that brings World War II veterans to Washington, DC at no cost to them for a day of honor. During the assembly, students will present a check to Honor Flight Chicago with the funds raised.  The students and veterans will also view a reenactment of a children’s story presented by the seventh grade staff.

Grand Prairie Elementary School at 10480 W. Nebraska will host an all-school Veterans Day assembly at 9:00 AM and all veterans are welcome to attend.  Students will sing patriotic songs and view a photo story video of veterans who are special to Grand Prairie students and staff.  In addition, students are making thank-you cards for veterans at the Manteno Veterans Home.  From November 11-22 the school will also collect items to send overseas to the troops.

 

At Chelsea Intermediate School, students will observe Veterans Day through a number of activities throughout the school day.  In music classes, all students are learning three patriotic songs, in art classes students are making bracelets to give to veterans, during their library time students are learning about the five military branches and in technology students are doing research on the contributions of veterans and their impact on our lives.  Classroom teachers are also guiding their students to write letters to veterans of specific military branches and as students recite the Pledge to the Flag each day they are sharing ways the military has impacted their lives.  The culmination will be a celebration assembly on at 9:30 AM at the school at 22265 S. 80th Avenue and veterans are invited to attend.  Following the presentation of colors by fifth grade Scout Troops, patriotic songs will be sung, and a presentation of photographs of students’ and staff’s veterans will be shown, followed by the retirement of colors by the fifth grade Scout Troops.
