Hickory Creek wins first ever Scholastic Bowl conference championship

Scholastic Bowl Championship!

Hickory Creek Middle School students took first place at the Des Plaines Valley Conference Scholastic Bowl competition.  During this event, scholastic teams compete by answering questions on a variety topics of human knowledge.  Topics include questions on Common Core subjects like mathematics and English language arts, as well as vocational and fine arts subject areas.

To prepare, participants may benefit from studying a broad range of academic subjects, increasing memorization and study skills, learning to work in teams and expanding capacity for responsibility.  Meets are played with a lockout buzzer system between two teams of five players each. A moderator reads questions to the teams, and players endeavor to buzz in first with the correct answer, scoring points for their team.

Hickory Creek's team had an outstanding ending to the year. After a tough battle all season long again their conference opponents, Hickory Creek defeated Martino Junior High School in the final round of the conference meet. This was a nail-biter ending that came down to five points. "It was one of the most suspenseful and nerve-wracking meets I have ever played, and it was worth it," stated Sam Passarelli, team captain.

The conference meet is four rounds long. In order to get into the final round Hickory Creek had to win all three of the previous rounds. But there was still a three-way tie to determine who went to the championship round against Martino. The first of two nail-biters for the day started with two speed rounds to determine the winner of the three-way tie. Hickory Creek dominated both of the speed rounds to enter the championship round against Martino.

During the championship round, it was a close competition with each team being ahead of the other many times throughout the 24 question round. In the end it came down to five points and Hickory Creek defeated Martino to win their first ever conference championship. This was a job well done by the entire team, led by eighth graders Sam Passerelli and Tim Lutz.  Hickory Creek teacher and coach Michelle Sommer stated, “"Our team worked together and set a goal to win the conference meet. And that is exactly what they did."
