Grand Prairie and Chelsea students get Earth Day help from Kohl's

Frankfort Kohl's supports local schools

The Frankfort Kohl’s recently partnered with Grand Prairie Elementary and Chelsea Intermediate students through their Kohl’s Cares “Go Green” grant.  In connection with Earth Day activities, Kohl’s associates came out to the schools and rolled up their sleeves to work with the students to plant flower seeds, grass seed and make seed cards. Participating Kohl’s employees included Frankfort store associates Cameron Bellamy, Riley Weitendorf, Mytchel Scott-Stirn, Vicky Kane, Mandy Hubbs, Tamara Coleman, Daniel Smith, Jim Souza and Ramona Machay.  Along with the Kohl’s employees’ participation in the projects, District 157-C schools qualified for a grant from Kohl’s.

At Grand Prairie Elementary School, students planted grass seed in various areas around the school property. They planted flowers around the flag pole in front of the school and made seed projects to take home. Teachers and administrators also read stories to the students highlighting Earth Day, including Principal Eileen Nelson reading the book “The First Forest” to second graders prior to a tree being planted in their honor as the class of 2013.  Each year, a tree will be planted in honor of the class leaving the school as they head to Chelsea Intermediate for third grade.

At Chelsea Intermediate School, students and Kohl’s employees worked on flower cards made of recycled paper with seeds that will grow after being watered on the paper.  The students also had a book exchange and a “Pass It On” challenge collection for Goodwill in competition with other area schools.  The school with the greatest number of items donated will receive a visit from Chicago Blackhawk Patrick Sharp.

All District 157-C schools participate in Earth Day activities.  Last year, Kohl’s employees helped Hickory Creek Middle School students plant flowerpots and weed three garden beds in conjunction with their greenhouse and garden projects.
