Chelsea students participate in mock presidential election
Chelsea students vote for president at school.
Chelsea Intermediate School third through fifth grade students participated in their own presidential election on November 6. The event meshes with District 157-C's Character Counts character education program. Chelsea fourth grade teacher Amy Cumbee volunteered to set up the election event and had assistance from other teachers and staff.
Chelsea physical education teachers conducted the student registration, voting and tallying of the results. The election area was set up in a separate room complete with voting booths and ballot boxes. Learning about good citizenship, students came into the election area during their physical education periods throughout the school day.
The result of the student election had a different result than the national election results. Candidate Mitt Romney won by 490 votes to President Obama's 322 votes. Each student was provided with an "I voted" sticker to wear after they participated.
