LWSRA Trunk or Treat

Halloween Gets a Jumpstart With Lincolnway Special Recreation Association

More Than 150 Area Youth Participate In Second Annual “Trunk or Treat”

For those kids who just couldn’t wait for Halloween to come, Lincolnway Special Recreation Association’s Second Annual Trunk or Treat did the trick. More than 150 area youth, dressed in their costumes, came out to the parking lot at Lincoln-Way East High School on Oct. 26.  They were greeted with plenty of candy by LWSRA staff and volunteers at the open decorated trunks of cars. LWSRA’s Trunk or Treat, a free event, provided a safe and alternative way for kids to do their trick-or-treating.

“I just love that this event is an inclusive opportunity for our participants to interact with the community. And better yet, everyone had a great time,” said Melissa Jensen, LWSRA Recreation Specialist.

In addition to receiving plenty of trick-or-treat candy that was donated by Walgreens of Frankfort Square, attendees also had an opportunity to play in a jumpy castle and enjoy free refreshments. The LWSRA Trunk or Treat was sponsored by First Midwest Bank of Frankfort, Pink Slip Boutique of Mokena and Premier Jewelry by Erica Lenihan. Wallace Entertainment provided the music and DJ dance party.

About Lincolnway Special Recreation Association

LWSRA offers Special Olympic and Adaptive sports and social recreation programs for individuals, preschool to adult, with physical or cognitive disabilities.  The organization created their TITANS program in 2003, a daily program exclusively for those 18 and older.  This program runs five hours a day for 50 weeks a year fostering independence through life and social skill activities.

LWSRA will open its’ own facility off Laraway near Schoolhouse Road in New Lenox early next year.  Once completed, the 17,000-square-foot building will be the first newly developed accessible recreation center in Illinois.  The 4.5 million building will be on 5.6 acres in the Heatherglen subdivision.  The building will include a teaching kitchen, gym, fitness area, therapy garden, four classrooms, staff offices and a wheelchair softball field.   The majority of funding (2.5 million) for the new LWSRA Recreation Center originated from an Illinois Department of Natural Resources Park and Recreational Facility Construction (PARC) grant secured for LWSRA by the New Lenox Park District.   The new building will allow LWSRA to expand its programs and significantly reduce program waiting lists.
