Local Grapplers Pin Down Competition
Local Wrestlers pinning their way through the toughest competition in the State
The Celtic Elite Wrestlers from the Lincolnway area are making waves in Illinois youth wrestling. The varsity level attended the Midwest Classic wrestling tournament hosted by the Tinley Park Bulldogs this weekend. The Midwest Classic provides some of the best competition in the State. Celtic Elite brought 14 wrestlers, and took 2nd place overall. The only other team scoring more points brought 34 scoring wrestlers.
Celtic Elite Wrestling Club is hosted by Providence Catholic High School and provides its wrestlers with the best coaching staff in Illinois. The non for profit club was started earlier this year. According to Coach Will McDermott the secret to their wrestlers success on the mat is simple. “Many clubs, parents, and wrestlers get wrapped up in individual accomplishments, we develop the individual out of the team and we are only as good as our least successful wrestler.”
The wrestlers from Celtic Elite that were in attendance are: Cole and Jackson Smith of Channahon, Jason Stokes of Mokena, Jake Polka, Lucas Weaver, and Sam Diehl all from Frankfort, Ben and Sam Emery, Jake Randolph, Liam Meagher, Jake Price, and Chris Kennedy all from New Lenox, Adam and Zack McDowell from Channahon. Each of the boys in attendance contributed to the team score.
Each of the wrestlers came prepared to win. With the majority of them placing in the top 5 of their respected weights. Celtic Elite is proving to excel at an elite level, with the dedication and hard work of each of their wrestlers and coaches. Will McDermott sums up the clubs ultimate goal for each of their wrestlers on and off the mat, “Wrestling is a sport that teaches hard work, and what the boys learn on the mat should follow to the classroom, our wrestlers will earn awards for having high grades, or a GPA of 3.5 or better. In regard to other sports, there is a reason when you walk into Providence’s gym that you see the State Championship banners of wrestling and football won in the same year. Those two sports work hand in hand.”
