Six Flags Great America Unveils 'Tiny' Surprise for Fright Fest 2013

Tiny the Spider made her triumphant return to the American Eagle in anticipation of Fright Fest, which opens Sept. 28.

The return of Tiny the Spider is just one of many things Six Flags Great America guests can enjoy when Fright Fest opens for its 23rd season Sept. 28.

Tiny, the not-so-tiny spider perched on the American Eagle roller coaster, "was found deflated and unresponsive on Six Flags grounds and pronounced dead" last fall, according to park officials.

Great America even held a funeral for the beloved spider.

This year, the spider is back, along with many other popular attractions, like the award-winning show "Love at First Fright" and hypnotist Susan Rosen. Fright Fest will also feature plenty of new attractions, including the haunted Hurricane Harbor area, Bermuda Triangle.

"We are unveiling our biggest Fright Fest event ever," said Salemi. "In response to our huge success in 2012, we are expanding this year's Fright Fest into Hurricane Harbor to create the Bermuda Triangle scare zone with two new houses, The Abyss and Total Darkness. You simply cannot find a more immersive haunt experience than Six Flags' Fright Fest."

This year's new attractions, according to a park press release, include:

Haunted Harbor

  • Bermuda Triangle – Many brave souls have dared to venture into the Bermuda Triangle only tobecome lost and swallowed up by the mysterious forces that live within.
  • The Abyss – Hundreds of people have been unaccounted for in this mysterious part of the Atlantic and they all want you to join them. Remember that passenger ship that never returned? They are still there. Waiting.
  • Total Darkness – It is said that in complete darkness the mind will begin to play tricks and all senses are heightened. With no concept of direction and misleading corners and blocked hallways guests will face their worst fears.
Newly-Themed Haunted Attractions

  • Wicked Woods - The infection has spread and humans are now outnumbered by the zombies. The undead have taken up camp in Wicked Woods guarding the human’s last refuge. The only chance for survival is to get past them.
  • Deadwood Grove – Formerly Yukon Territory – Deadwood Grove is a place no one wants to find themselves. This ghost town was once a bustling "plaid collar" lumber mill town, Deadwood Grove is now a complete ghost town.
  • Skull Valley – Formerly Southwest Territory – The dead have risen from the mission graveyard for the day of the dead. This area is their final resting place, but tonight they seek vengeance.
  • Grim Hollow – Formerly County Fair Train Station Area – On the outskirts of every farm town, in the darkness beyond the safety of neighborhoods and street lights, strange things happen in the cornfields that can only be explained by legends and nightmares.
  • Purgatory Plaza – Formerly Carousel Plaza – Cross through the gates of Fright Fest into Purgatory Plaza, and face some of the most notorious haunts of Halloween nightmares.
Fright Fest starts Sept. 28 and will be held on weekends through October, along with two Thursday nights. The hours are Fridays from 5-11 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The park will also be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Columbus Day, along with from 6-10 p.m. Oct. 17 and 24.
