Kindness of the Taco Variety

Sharing lunch with some hard working people.

Did I give up yet? Not a chance! I had to go to where else Thursday--the library! I had to help a librarian teach a story time. Working with the kids and seeing them laugh and get soaked into a book and just want more makes my cheeks hurt with smiling. Is this the kind act for the day? It could be, but I’m a stickler for self-imposed rules. (You know those rules that you make up for yourself, the ones that no one even knows about but you? Yep, those.) Since I had scheduled this story time prior to my month, I didn’t think it would be fair to include it also, it was also to seek out moms to become a Friend of the Frankfort Library, a wonderful group that sells books to provide funding to the library … oops, I digress. So anyway after the clean-up portion of the day was done, it was nearly lunchtime. Insert kind act of the day here.

If you are in any part of the United States with paved roads, I am sure that you are experiencing some sort of construction. You know the kind that makes you late or frustrated when you get that great big stop sign in front of your car, the stuff that forces you to a crawl, tickets starting at $325 dollars? Yes, that construction.  I have to look at it like this: There are electricians, plumbers, pipe fitters, surveys, laborers, operators and more that are out there in the cold winter months working. Workers standing feet away from drivers that don’t follow the law to be hands free on their phone and speeding by not caring about another’s life. Some of these people have been out of work for months or longer. Being that my husband is in the trades, and we have so many friends that we know that are good hard working people, sitting at home or working for 1/8 of their salary just to keep food on the table and a roof over their families heads, I care for them. It’s a scary time, especially when in our household my husband is carrying the weight of that burden much, much (did I say much?) more than I am. Not for lack of effort but it’s the simple truth. We are fortunate now that he isn’t laid off.  OK, time to get to the meat--or should I say taco meat?--of the story!

Stopping by Taco Bell, I picked up a case of tacos, and the lady was so sweet to give a ton of sauce, napkins and a sweet smile as I pulled away. Heading over to Lincoln Highway I pulled down a section of road that there were a handful of guys, digging, directing and working. Lucky for me, traffic was slow so I darted across with the case, and this guy looked at me like I was crazy, turned and started to walk away. I had to yell to get his attention, extending the box. He took it with puzzlement.

"Lunchtime, just share with your pals”, I told him.

He asked who they were from, and I said, “Me. It’s just a small act of kindness, enjoy!”

He set the tacos near a barrel, said thank you and guess what, another smile! As I was turning around to head home, he was waving to some of the guys to grab a taco. I think there were a couple of saucy smiles on the job site today.

I nearly forgot! On Wednesday, since my neighbor knows my love of books and my son’s obsession, too, she came to the bus stop with two more bags for us to read or share with the book sale! An act of kindness from her as well, and I’m sure not the only one of the day either! The money at the printers, gone, and the librarians said it took many by surprise and no one took it all at once either! Who knows what will be in store for day four. Stay tuned!
