The Second World War by Antony Beevor
The Second World War begins with the story of a German soldier who was actually Korean, was captured in Normandy, and eventually moved to Illinois.  Historian Beevor's comprehensive volume features new scholarship and research. He presents the experiences of individuals within the framework of the world's largest conflict. The choices they made and profound changes in their lives are illuminated in this descriptive, compelling narrative.


Running the Rift by Naomi Benaron
If you loved Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner, this coming-of-age story set in genocide-torn Rwanda may appeal to you.  Jean Patrick Nkuba, a Tutsi boy with a gift for running, carries Olympic aspirations.  Despite poverty and ethnic quotas, he pursues his dream.  As he moves closer to realizing his dream, his country hurtles into a civil war.  Benaron balances sobering descriptions of the violence of genocide with genuine human warmth and the natural beauty of Rwanda.  This character-driven novel won the Bellwether Prize for fiction.
