IPO @ Ravisloe: Travel "Bach" in Time with New Comma Baroque on July 23

In the third IPO Summer Music Series concert on July 23 at 7 p.m., New Comma Baroque will take audience members "Bach" in time with a delightful program of Baroque dances by composer Georg Philipp Telemann. New Comma Baroque, a Chicago-based ensemble formed by IPO double bassist Phillip Serna, is part of the Historically Informed Performance movement.

"This is a growing movement in Chicago and definitely not as prevalent here as on the East and West Coasts," Serna explained.

However, his ensemble is "dedicated to reengaging modern audiences" in this chamber music art form, he added.

The movement attempts to get away from all of the editorial interpretation added to classical music over the centuries and get back to what the composer really wrote, relying on the cultural context of the composer's own national identity.

"It's literally like trying to cook a(n ethnic) dish with the regional ingredients so that (the music) sounds authentic to the country of origin," Serna said.

Accordingly, Serna describes Telemann as a "real cosmopolitan character" who traveled extensively and incorporated the nuances of each country's culture into the music he wrote, allowing it to appeal to a more diverse audience. The July 23 Ravisloe program, "Telemann's Travels" will feature vibrant music with French, Italian, German and Polish flavors, encapsulating the travels of one of the 18th century's most prolific composers, Serna said.

Instrumentation for the concert will be: Phillip Serna, Viola de Gamba; Emily Katayama, Harpsichord; and Matthew Cataldi, Baroque Violin.

Tickets are $30 each and are available by calling 708.481.7774 or online at ipomusic.org. Limited tickets are available at the door, and this performance will be held inside in the Great Room. The Ravisloe grill is open for dining before the concert until 6:30 p.m. Ravisloe Country Club is located at 18231 Park Avenue in Homewood.
