“Images of World War II and the Holocaust”
Community
members are invited to a special showing of genuine World War II and Holocaust artifacts from the collection of Dr. Joseph Matheu.
Some
of the items that will be displayed from the collection include an Iwo Jima
helmet with a bullet hole in it, photos of Holocaust victims taken by an
American soldier, an Auschwitz concentration camp prisoner’s uniform, the inscribed
gold ring that was used in the movie “Schindler’s List”, part of the USS
Arizona ship that was sunk at Pearl Harbor, a Japanese sword, a captured Hitler
Youth Group armband, Russian and German uniforms, and the bell from a Catholic
Church that survived the nuclear bombing of Nagasaki, Japan.
Donations will be accepted at the door for the
school’s annual effort to raise funds for Honor
Flight Chicago where students and staff sponsor World War II veterans on a trip
to Washington, D.C. to see their memorial.
