On Oct. 4, the team will host its fifth annual Volley for the Cure Match, a nationwide effort to honor and celebrate the heroic fight against breast cancer.

“The girls enjoy the energy that our fans provide and want to show their talents and team spirit,” explained head coach Linda Vivona.

“Volleyball is a fast-paced, energetic game where momentum can shift quickly,” she added. “Often times, the outcome can’t be determined until very late in the contest.”

This will be the fourth year the girls’ volleyball team has paid tribute to its teachers and the fifth year it has hosted a Volley for the Cure Match.

“The Teacher Appreciation match is a great way for our program to let teachers know that we appreciate their dedication to their classes,” said Vivona. “Our players are student-athletes and they know that they must be successful in the classroom as well as on the court.”

At the Volley For the Cure Match on Oct. 4 match, players will be wearing pink jerseys and raising money for Breast Cancer Awareness programs by selling cookies and brownies as well as clothing items.

Spectators will be encouraged to get involved by signing a pink banner if they are breast cancer survivors or fighters, or if they know someone who has lost their life to the disease. Breast cancer fighters and survivors will be invited down to the court between matches to receive a flower from players showing their support.

“The Volley For The Cure match is a fun-filled event,” said Vivona, who has special T-shirts made up each year.

This year’s shirt will read: “Wild About Pink? You Think.”

The shirts will be sold for $10 each during school lunch periods starting the week of Sept. 17. Proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.
