Retired AD named honorary tournament chair of Medieval Classic

David Brost was picked to chair Lincoln-Way's annual Medieval Classic, which will be held Dec. 26-29 at Lincoln-Way East and Lincoln-Way North high schools.

    A retired athletic director who once organized the Lincoln-Way East Medieval Classic Holiday Basketball Tournament has been selected to serve as this year’s Honorary Tournament Chair.

 

   David Brost, who retired as Lincoln-Way East’s Athletic Director at the end of the 2011-2012 school year, was picked to chair Lincoln-Way’s annual Medieval Classic, Dec. 26-29.

   “Being the original Athletic Director here at East, Dave put a lot of time and energy into building the athletic program,” said Lincoln-Way East Athletic Director Mark Vander Kooi. “He spent a lot of time working at the Medieval Tournament in his career so it is fitting that he is the honorary tournament chair.”

   The Medieval Classic Tournament will be held at Lincoln-Way East and Lincoln-Way North high schools and feature boy’s and girl’s basketball matches between Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East, Lincoln-Way North, Lincoln-Way West, Oak Lawn, Harper, Lincoln Park, Plainfield South, Oak Forest, Shepard, Andrew and Noble St. Charter/UIC.

   As Honorary Tournament Chair, Brost will attend games and hand out trophies on the final day.

   Brost was the driving force behind the formation of Lincoln-Way East’s athletic department when the school was preparing to become a four-year high school.

   He spent his first year hiring coaches, ordering equipment and establishing a Booster Club with parent volunteers.

   During his tenure as athletic director, Brost saw the school win four state championships and 13 state trophies.

   The retired administrator joins a long list of distinguished Honorary Tournament Chairs. They include:

2010 – Brenda Jensen, retired Lincoln-Way East principal

2009 -- Jeff Boubelik, retired Frankfort Park District director

2008 -- Bob Romadka, retired Lincoln-Way District 210 teacher

2006 – James T. Fagan, former Lincoln-Way District 210 school board member

2005 – Jim Kohlbacker, former chair Citizens for Lincoln-Way referendum committee

2004 – Michael Gardner, Lincoln-Way North principal

2003 – Dennis Hardy, Lincoln-Way East Athletic Booster

2002 – Michael Kelly, former Lincoln-Way counselor

2001 – Chief Darrell Sanders, Frankfort Police Department

2000 – Dennis Michels, former Lincoln-Way athletic director

1999 – Bill Dowling, former Athletic Booster president

1998 – Jim High, former math teacher

1997 – Sam and Sandy Baughn, Lincoln-Way Athletic Boosters

   The 2012 Lincoln-Way East Medieval Classic Holiday Basketball Tournament will begin at 3 p.m. Dec.26 when the Lincoln-Way Central girl’s basketball team takes on Lincoln Park at Lincoln-Way North. The Lincoln-Way West girl’s basketball team will play Andrew at the same time at Lincoln-Way East.
