More than 150 Lincoln-Way East students inducted into honorary math club

The students qualified for induction by completing geometryand maintaining a 3.0 grade point average or higher in all math courses.

  More than 150 Lincoln-Way East High School students were inducted into the Mu Alpha Theta honorary math club Tuesday night (March 26).

 

   The students qualified for induction by completing geometry, being enrolled in or having completed Advanced Algebra or Trigonometry or higher, and maintaining a 3.0 grade point average or higher in all math courses. They also posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher in all other classes.

   “I would like to congratulate each and every one of you,” junior Jack Finn, president of the honorary math club, told students during Tuesday’s induction ceremony in the school auditorium.

   “Mu Alpha Theta provides a method for schools to recognize those who excel in mathematics,” he added.

 

   The goals of Mu Alpha Theta are to inspire a keen interest in mathematics, develop strong scholarship in the subject, and promote the enjoyment of mathematics, according to Jeff Keller, the mathematics department chair at East.

 

  Club members will have opportunities to hear guest speakers, hold fundraisers for the Della Hussey Scholarship Fund for students, host the Grade School Math Contest and participate in the Mu Alpha Theta National Convention.

 

   Among those inducted into Mu Alpha Theta on Tuesday were: Allison Abel, Megan Arseneau, Kelsey Bailey, Kristen Bainbridge, Jeffrey Bandurski, Sydney Barrera, Amy Bauer, Olivia Bauer, Austin Blair, Deonna Bolden, Victoria Buffone, Erin Bullington, Victoria Butler, Claire Cable, Sedona Cady, Chloe Cahill, Breanna Cap, Jason Carli, Brigid Clark, Anthony Colangelo, Anna Conboy, Kaitlin Connors, Maria Corazzi, Amanda Cosco, Abby Couwenhoven, Emma Crumpley and Rebecca Curtis.

 

   Also inducted into the honorary society were: Bradley Dahlman, Maria DiGiovanni, Thomas DiNaso II, Samantha Dunlap, Paul Eckel, Nelson Eisenmann, Michael Enright, Marissa Esparza, Nicholas Ferracuti, Dana Franceschini, Chase Fugett, Mark Fuka, Jettero Fushi, Sean Gallagher, Christian Geoppo, Anna Gerdes, Natalie Gevaudan, Lindsay Grata, Sara Groth, Jessica Halyko, Luke Hanlon, Shannon Hart, Erin Hayes, Kenichi Haynie, Evan Heathcock, Matthew Heinen, Thomas Hoblin and Andrew Hoyle.

   Lincoln-Way East High School Principal Scott Tingley thanked parents and faculty members for taking time to recognize the students who put forth extra effort and who achieve at high academic levels.

 

   He reflected on his own high school years at a small Catholic school in Effingham and how his teachers taught him how to think, how to persevere and how to cope.

 

   “Those ladies provided me with the structure and fundamentals to be successful,” he said.

 

   “I congratulate you all on your induction into Mu Alpha Theta,” he concluded. “The lessons that you have learned in math will help you to persevere and succeed in your endeavors as a student and beyond.”
