Lincoln-Way students take top honors on National Latin Exam

Twenty-nine earn certificates and/or medals after demonstrating a high aptitude for Latin vocabulary and historical information as well as Roman history, mythology and culture

 

   A group of Lincoln-Way High School District 210 students has demonstrated a high aptitude for Latin vocabulary and historical information as well as Roman history, mythology and culture by earning certificates and medals on the 2013 National Latin Exam.

   About 90 students from Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East, Lincoln-Way North and Lincoln-Way West high schools took the exam, fielding questions in Latin vocabulary, grammatical structures, translation and historical information.

   They were among 154,000 students from more than 15 countries to take the exam.

 

   “It's a very broad test,” said Lincoln-Way Latin teacher Sean Maher, “and it's hard to do well because one can never know the exact topics that will be on there.”

 

   Of the 89 Lincoln-Way students who took the exam, 19 were awarded certificates and 10 received certificates and medals. Five are now eligible for additional scholarships from the National Latin Exam committee. 

 

   “We are so proud of these students for their interest and extra effort in participating in this exam,” stated Peg Bobber, chair of the World Languages Department at Lincoln-Way East and Lincoln-Way North high schools. “Their interest in the classics is commendable and to earn awards in an international exam speaks highly of their talents in the classroom.”  

 

   “We are thrilled to have so many Latin students who have taken up interest in this classical language,” added Carollyn Mushro, chair of the World Languages Department at Lincoln-Way Central and Lincoln-Way West. “Their participation and distinction is certainly an accolade for all of them, as well as for Lincoln-Way.”

 

   Among the students who earned the top honor of Gold Summa Cum Laude were: Abbie Orr, Emma Vanderpool, Erica Sestak, Christian Gorski and Margaret Hoeller.

 

   Recipients of the Silver Maxima Cum Laude medals were: Daniel Zolecki, Grace Gladding, Matthew Stern, Christian Geoppo and Zachary Johnson.

 

   Magna Cum Laude certificates were awarded to: Verity Zaczek, Ronald Leclercq, Tiffany Le, Aislinn Baltas, Austin Szubryt, Nicole Suhm, Peter Grubisich, Ashley Pavlak, Ryan Spain, Haleigh Hunter and Emily Owens.

 

   Cum Laude certificates were awarded to: Austin Vucsko, Rachel Welch, Michael Kuehni, Allison Mathews, Christopher Cranston, Evan Surma, Sarah Bonamino and John Wolf.

 

   As recipients of the gold medal honors, Abbie Orr, Emma Vanderpool, Erica Sestak, Christian Gorski and Margaret Hoeller are now eligible for additional scholarships from the National Latin Exam committee.
