Lincoln-Way North Students Inducted Into Science Honor Society

Students pledge to represent the academic goals of the Science National Honor Society and to encourage the pursuit of scientific knowledge that benefits all mankind.

Nearly 70 students were inducted into the Science National Honor Society (SNHS) on Wednesday, Jan. 11.

The students were selected based on their outstanding commitment to academic excellence in all course work, especially in the area of science.

“On the stage tonight are some of the finest students at Lincoln-Way North High School,” said Dr. Michael Gardner, principal. “They have exhibited a liking to the processes of science and are interested in their surroundings. I congratulate them for their outstanding work and for their inquisitive minds, which may lead them to a future as scientists.”

The Science National Honor Society was established in 2000 and welcomes all qualified secondary school students to participate in and to be recognized for scientific excellence, explained science teacher Lauren Sick, co-sponsor of Lincoln-Way North’s chapter of the Science National Honor Society.

The chapter was formed at the school last year.

The SNHS is an honorary organization founded to acknowledge the strong effort put forth by outstanding students studying the sciences, added Sick. Students are inducted based on the following criteria:

  • Must be classified as either a junior or senior at Lincoln-Way North
  • Must have and maintain a 3.0 grade point average overall
  • Must have and maintain a 3.5 grade point average across all science courses

“Every student being inducted into the Lincoln-Way North Science National Honor Society this evening has met and maintained (these qualifications),” said Sick.

SNHS co-sponsor Elizabeth Hamann led the inductees in a pledge, which had them promise to do their best to represent the academic goals of the Science National Honor Society at Lincoln-Way North and to encourage the pursuit of scientific knowledge that benefits all mankind.

“On behalf of the Lincoln-Way North Science Department, I welcome you into the Science National Honor Society,” she told students after they affirmed the pledge.
