L-W North Varsity Phoenix Firebirds Head to State Poms Competition

Seventeen-member squad delivers high-powered, crowd-pleasing routine with a "Wizard of Oz" theme.

The Varsity Phoenix Firebirds are headed to state after capturing first place at the Wheaton Warrenville South competition this past weekend (Dec. 17).

The 17-member squad delivered a high-powered, crowd-pleasing poms routine with a Wizard of Oz theme.

“As a squad, we did not know what to expect at our first competition, but the judges seemed to be impressed with our routine,” said head coach Monica Bozek.

“The girls have worked hard and need to continue to have the energy and motivation to excel at our next four competitions,” she added.  “The squad’s goal is to raise our score at each competition. Our next competition is Jan. 8 in  Batavia.”

Members of the winning Varsity Phoenix Firebirds squad are: Brandy Huppert, Bailey Stremlau, Kendal Sykes, Haley Collins, Jenna McKenna, Alyssa Borsellino, Amanda Kemp, Rebecca Garcia, Rachel Trudeau, Colleen Laughlin, Victoria Gutkin, Stephanie Hinkleman, Casey Houlihan, Elizabeth Warkocki and Jordin Richards.

Team captains are Katie Bakouris and Danielle Ward.

The squad will head to Peoria in March for the state competition.
