L-W North Marching Phoenix take 1st in visual ensemble and visual general effect
The 107-member band competed Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Knight of Champions marching band competition in Mount Prospect, IL.
The Lincoln-Way North High School Marching Phoenix earned a number of awards this past weekend, including first for Visual Ensemble and Visual General Effect.

“We challenged the kids a lot that day, and they responded in astonishing style, said Lincoln-Way North music instructor Kirk Hickman, who had students learn a new, one-minute portion of the show Saturday morning before packing up and heading to Mount Prospect, IL where they competed in the Knights of Champions marching band competition.

“The drive they have shown us is remarkable and a sign of a very special group,” he added, explaining how the students began their weekend by performing at the school’s football game Friday night, followed by a seven-hour practice session on Saturday and a homecoming parade on Sunday.
“They went through all of it without as much as a yawn,” said Hickman.
The 107-member band competed Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Knight of Champions marching band competition in Mount Prospect, IL.
Led by drum majors Morgan Boman and Alec Chase, the band competed in Class AAA of the competition, facing bands from Lake Park, Morton, Lockport, Glenbrook South, Wheeling, Victor J. Andrew and Stagg high schools.
The Marching Phoenix finished 3rd overall with its competitive field show “New Beginnings.” The band also won the caption award for best colorguard.
“The recognition the group has been receiving is great, but the students are truly focused on getting their entire show performed as perfectly as they can every time we take the field,” said Hickman.
“When we talk to them about competitions, they really seem to only care about the feeling they have when they left the field, the crowd reaction, and what they want to be at the end of the season,” he added.
The band will compete next at the Bands of America Regional in Akron, Ohio on Oct. 13.
Area residents will have an opportunity to see the band perform the show in its entirety at a Marching Band Showcase featuring all four Lincoln-Way marching bands on Oct. 24 at Lincoln-Way West High School, 21701 S. Gougar Road, New Lenox. The event will begin at 7 p.m.
