Two students from Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 participated in a state cosmetology competition this month, earning 10th place in the highly competitive Make-up Fantasy Category.

Appollonia Massey, a senior at Lincoln-Way North, and Jodi Diaz, a senior at Lincoln-Way West, participated in the 27th annual Illinois Association of Cosmetology Schools (IACS) Student Competition on Nov. 11 at the Tinley Park Convention Center.

They were among more than 100 students from across the state to participate in the event, which featured six categories of competition -- 80’s Retro, Red Carpet Diva, Fantasy/Flat Nail Art, Color to the Extreme, Long Hair Mannequin and Make-up Fantasy.

Appollonia and Jodi, who are enrolled in District 210’s cooperative cosmetology program with Capri Beauty College in New Lenox, competed in the Make-up Fantasy category. They were judged on their theme, design and color as well as their use of materials and the application techniques they used, including sanitation procedures.

“It takes a lot of dedication and hard work to be part of a college program while you still remain a high school student,” said Elizabeth Russler, cosmetology coordinator and family and consumer sciences department chair at Lincoln-Way East and Lincoln-Way North high schools.
