L-W East Marching Griffins to unveil field show at community concert
Ice Cream Social planned for 8 p.m. Sept. 1.
The Lincoln-Way East Marching Griffins will reveal a portion of their 2012 field show at a community concert on Sept. 1.
Students have been practicing nearly every day to prepare for the 2012 marching season, learning new music, refining their marching steps and building endurance for the multiple parades, halftime shows and competitive field shows that they will participate in this school year.

As a “thank you” to the neighbors who have listened patiently to the sound of tooting horns, rhythmic timekeepers and booming bass drums, the Marching Griffins will host an Ice Cream Social at the school Saturday, Sept. 1 at 8 p.m.

“The Marching Griffins started rehearsing on June 12 and have been working hard from the first step,” said music instructor Chris Mroczek. “The students have already put in countless hours of rehearsal, including time learning and mastering marching basics, music performance basics, preparing to march/perform in parades and procedures for rehearsal that we as an organization will use throughout the season.
“The students are prepared, excited and enthusiastic about the 2012 marching season,” he added. “I am very proud of them and the work they have done thus far.”
This year’s competitive show is “1904.” The music is inspired by the musical group Sigur Ros and the performing duo Jonsi and Alex. The name of their album is “Riceboy Sleeps.”
“The `1904’ concept comes from one of the compositions on the album, called `Boy, 1904,’” said Mroczek. “The music itself is mesmerizing – always in a sort of dream state and is very ambient in nature. The visual elements incorporated will include events and music from the year 1904.”
The band will take the show on the road Sept. 8 when it participates in its first competition of the season at the 34th annual Lake Park Lancer Joust Marching Band Competition in Roselle.
All four Lincoln-Way high school marching bands will come together Oct. 24 to perform at a Marching Band Showcase to be held at Lincoln-Way West High School.
