L-W East, L-W North art students recognized for outstanding achievement

Luke Shepard and Gina Sipka will be recognized at the Joliet Junior College Area High School Art Exhibition awards ceremony on Nov. 29 in Joliet.

Two art students from Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 have been singled out for special recognition at the Joliet Junior College (JJC) Area High School Art Exhibition.

Lincoln-Way East senior Luke Shepard and Lincoln-Way North senior Gina Sipka will be recognized at an awards ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 29) in the Fine Arts Theatre of JJC’s Fine Arts Building in Joliet.

“We are extremely proud of both Gina and Luke,” said Phil Labriola, the art department chair Lincoln-Way East and Lincoln-Way North high schools. “The JJC High School Show is very competitive and it is a huge honor for both of those students to be recognized with awards for their outstanding achievement.”

Every year, JJC invites area high schools to submit up to five pieces of student artwork per school to display in its High School Art Exhibit.

This year, 23 high schools submitted 108 pieces of artwork, including of variety of photographs, pencil drawings, scratchboards and acrylic paintings. Of those pieces, 17 were selected by full-time JJC art faculty for special recognition.

Among them were a Luke’s detailed pencil drawing of stack of lumber and Gina’s exquisite pencil drawing of a pair of shoes still in the box.

Their artwork, as well as the 106 other pieces submitted by area high schools, will remain on display at JJC through Dec. 7. The artwork can be found in the Laura Sprague Art Gallery in Building “J.”
