Homecoming 2012 comes to a close at L-W North

Lincoln-Way North High School has closed the chapter on another homecoming.

Homecoming 2012 included a week of themed activities, including a community parade, pep rally, football game and dance.

Students selected the theme “Welcome to the Ice Age” and decorated the school with ice-blue streamers, frosted windows and balloons.

At the community parade on Sept. 30, more than 1,500 student athletes, academic teams, marching bands and community organizations, including the Lincoln-Way North Marching Phoenix and the Summit Hill Junior High School Marching Band, marched down Sky Drive and through the neighborhood adjacent to the school.

“It was a great way to start off our homecoming week,” said Lincoln-Way North Activities Coordinator Jaime Calby. “Students are very proud of this annual tradition.”

“The parade offers us the opportunity to come together as a community,” agreed Lincoln-Way North Principal Michael Gardner, who thanked Frankfort Square Park District, Frankfort Township Road District and the Will County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance.

On Monday (Oct. 1), students launched their week of themed clothing – always respectful of the school dress guidelines.

Monday was Classy Monday with students wearing their finest threads. Tuesday was Super Hero Tuesday and Wednesday was Wacky Wednesday. On Thursday, students relived their early years by wearing jerseys and T-shirts from their youth for Throwback Thursday.

Friday was the traditional Phoenix Phriday with students and staff dressing up in the school’s colors.  

On Oct. 1 and 2, students staged their annual dodgeball tournament and Homecoming Olympics Events Night in the field house with the winning teams going on to compete at the school’s pep assembly on Friday (Oct. 5).

Interspersed between the tug-o-war, duct tape race and dodgeball game were performances by the Marching Phoenix, cheerleaders and poms.

The ROTC got the assembly started by posting the colors, and the school’s Madrigal Singers sang the National Anthem.

The assembly ended with the naming of the school’s 2012 Homecoming King and Queen as well as their court.

The Homecoming King is senior Ron Davis; the Homecoming Queen is Marissa Rubino. Homecoming court members include: freshman Prince Owen McGee, freshman Princess Clare Maylone; sophomore Prince Austin Konagel, sophomore Princess Morgan Giusto, junior Prince Julian Hylton and junior Princess Erin Julius.

That night, North’s football team went on to defeat Thornridge 42 to 6.

The festivities concluded with a homecoming dance on Saturday (Oct. 6). More than 1,600 students attended.
