Cancer fighters, survivors invited to Volley For the Cure match at L-W East

Girls volleyball team wants to recognize those who have survived or continue to fight cancer at its Volley for the Cure match on Oct. 4.

If you are a cancer fighter or survivor, the Lincoln-Way East High School girls volleyball team would like to recognize you at its Volley for the Cure match on Oct. 4.

“Volley for the Cure is a nationwide effort to honor and celebrate the heroic fight against breast cancer,” said Linda Vivona, the head girls volleyball coach at Lincoln-Way East. “We hope the community will join us Oct. 4 as the girls volleyball team participates in its fifth annual Volley for the Cure match.”

Please include your name and phone number so that Vivona can contact you if necessary. Also, please wear pink to the match, which will begin at 5:45 p.m. in the main gym at Lincoln-Way East High School, 201 Colorado Ave., Frankfort.

East’s girls volleyball team will be wearing pink jerseys that night and raising money for Breast Cancer Awareness programs by selling cookies and brownies as well as clothing items.

Spectators will be encouraged to get involved by signing a pink banner if they are breast cancer survivors or fighters, or if they know someone who has lost their life to the disease. Breast cancer fighters and survivors will be invited down to the court between matches to receive their flowers.

“The Volley For The Cure match is a fun-filled event,” said Vivona, who has special T-shirts made up each year.

This year’s shirt will read: “Wild About Pink? You Think.”

The shirts will be sold at the match for $10 each. Proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.
