Battle of the Bands Competition March 9

Six student bands have been selected to compete at Lincoln-Way Central High School in conjunction with the community's annual Asset Celebration.

The competition is on as six student bands have been selected to participate in this year’s Battle of the Bands at .

The bands, which include students from all four Lincoln-Way schools, will take the stage at 6:30 p.m. March 9 in conjunction with the community’s annual Asset Celebration.

“This is a great event when all our Lincoln-Way students can come together to showcase their talents,” said student activities coordinator Jaime Calby, who is organizing the event with Central’s activities coordinator Dustin Waddell, East’s activities coordinator Katie Meader and West’s activities coordinator Heather Novak.

“In addition to showcasing their talents, they can make new friends and new memories of their high school experience,” she added.
 
Battle of the Bands is part of a community-wide Asset Celebration organized by Lincoln-Way High School District 210, area religious groups and the New Lenox, Mokena, , and Manhattan park districts.
  
Hundreds of area residents participate in the two-day celebration each year, enjoying a variety of free programs and entertainment.

Students had to audition for an opportunity to participate in this year’s Battle of the Bands competition by submitting a demo tape or CD to the student activities coordinators in February.

Sixteen groups submitted examples of their work, and the activities coordinators picked six to advance to the Battle of the Bands competition on March 9.

Many of the groups include students from multiple high schools. One group, for example, includes two students from and three students from Lincoln-Way North. Another includes one student from Lincoln-Way Central and two from Lincoln-Way West.

“It’s inspiring to see how many of the bands have students from multiple Lincoln-Way schools,” said Lincoln-Way East Activities Coordinator Katie Meader. “Our kids are working together across the district.”

Among the bands selected to compete March 9 are:

  • Breaker! Breaker
  • D by Jetpak 
  • Ockam’s Razor 
  • Pass with Care 
  • The Bright Sides 
  • The Matinee

The band battle will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 9 at Lincoln-Way Central High School.

The event is free and open to middle school, junior high and high school students from the Lincoln-Way area. Students must show their school IDs to gain entrance.

The Asset Celebration will continue at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 10, with a pancake breakfast at Lincoln-Way East High School, 201 Colorado Ave., Frankfort. Lincoln-Way area religious groups will serve up complimentary hotcakes in the school cafeteria until 10 a.m. that day. Donations will be accepted to cover food expenses.

Also beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 10 will be a Family Faire, sponsored by Lincoln-Way area park districts, in the Lincoln-Way East High School gymnasium. Visitors will find children’s games, crafts and live entertainment with a Dr. Seuss theme from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Entrance is free, but children are asked to bring a small new toy (such as a Happy Meal toy) to donate to The Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation. The toys are used to provide comfort and distraction from painful procedures to children and teens who have been diagnosed with cancer.
