Plaza Cafe, Frankfort (5 of 5 stars)

The good: The Plaza offers a variety of French toast, which made it a little difficult to decide. I picked the South Beach French toast--four pieces dipped in crunchy cinammon and sugar egg batter--and was in heaven. Given how it's prepared, I thought the South Beach order might be a bit on the sugary side. Instead, it was just the right amount of sweet that wasn't overpowering, even with syrup. The thick bread slices were cooked perfectly, hitting that perfect balance between too crispy and too chewy.

The bad: This is some filling French toast. I couldn't finish it all and wished I had ordered the short stack. Good advice for next time (and there will be a next time).

Mattina Cafe, New Lenox (4 of 5 stars)

The good: I got the Tuscan French toast, which featured a simple cinnamon raisin bread. The raisins added lots of flavor, and the hint of cinnamon was a nice touch. Mattina offers other Drench toasts that are a bit more dressed up, including the French quarters (stuffed with sweet cheese and deep fried), the 8th & Ocean (dipped in cinnamon and sugar butter) or with fruit and whipped cream. So I'll be back to try the others.

The bad: A couple bites were a bit too eggy and not crispy enough. The menu said the Tuscan was "French toast like you've never tasted," but it wasn't anything out of the ordinary.

The Breakfast Nook, Mokena (5 of 5 stars)

The good: While I could have gotten offbeat varieties like Taffy Apple or Bananas Foster, I went for the thick bread French toast. They're not kidding about the thick. It was filling, perfectly cooked and ready surprisingly quickly. is owned by the former chef at in Mokena and the now-closed Mary Todd’s in Frankfort.

The bad: My only complaint about the meal was that it ended.
