Souper Bowl Shuffle: Who Ladles Out a Winning Cup?

This week, your local editors tried soup in Frankfort, New Lenox and Mokena. Tell us which spot you think reigns supreme for a shot at winning a $50 gift card to a local restaurant.

For this week's Chowdown Showdown, we dined on soup from eateries in Frankfort, New Lenox and Mokena.

Local editors Joe Vince (Frankfort), Michael Sewall (New Lenox) and Paul Dailing (Mokena) tried a bowl at restaurants in their respective Patch towns.

Kismet, Frankfort (3.5 of 5 stars)

The good: The diner offers homemade soup—and chili—daily, and I tried a bowl of the cream of chicken and rice. It's a nice treat on a brisk afternoon. The soup is smooth with just the right amount of thickness. Plus, it is packed with good-sized chunks of chicken. 

The bad: Although it was creamy, the soup tasted watered down and flat. It could've stood to have a little more "oomph" in the flavor department.

Fox's on Wolf, Mokena (4 of 5 stars)

The good: The vegetables were key to the vegetable beef soup, Fox's only soup that's on the menu every day. The carrots in particular were nice and firm—I can't stand when places cook the carrots into mush.

The bad: I could have used more noodles and beef, but maybe that's just me. Either way, this is a hearty, delicious soup, which the online menu declares is from a traditional Irish recipe.

Cozy Cafe, New Lenox (0 of 5 stars)

The good: The cream of chicken wild rice soup featured some hearty pieces of tasty chicken, just not enough. Also good is the fact that I've had great soups from other New Lenox restaurants.

The bad: Well, I got food poisoning. So maybe a zero-star review is part of a grudge, I left the restaurant thinking I'd give it closer to one or two stars. The broth wasn't creamy (which is important in a cream-of-anything soup), and the rice definitely didn't taste like wild rice, but more like the sticky white rice from Chinese takeout.
