Seal Coating the Driveway: What's the Best Practice?

Fall is the time of year when many homeowners contemplate seal coating the driveway. Are you a do-it-yourself type or do you hire out?

Are you seal coating the asphalt driveway this fall?

Some people prefer a do-it-yourself approach. They buy the sealant, usually sold in 5-gallon buckets, from the likes of Lowe's Home Improvement, 2480 E. Lincoln Highway in New Lenox, or Home Depot, 20101 S. LaGrange Road in Frankfort, and spread the sticky black petroleum byproduct with a squeegee adhered to a broomstick.

At Lowe's the price per bucket ranges from $12.95 to $31.95, depending on the longevity of the seal—two, five or 10 years.

Of course, then there is the matter of filling cracks or perhaps potholes. The extras are sold separately.

Other homeowners are apt to call a professional asphalt seal coating company. The advantage here is that it's hassle free. Because each job has so many variables--current condition and size—local firms generally don't offer a ballpark price.

However, Fixr .com notes on its website, "The average cost to seal an asphalt driveway is about $202 for a 15-by-50-foot driveway."

What's the best deal? Do-it-yourself or hiring out?
