Frankfort Plays Waiting Game with Vacant Dominick's Storefront

Large building likely to be subdivided for new tenants. What should go here?

The former Dominick's grocery store on LaGrange Road in Frankfort still sits empty, along with several smaller storefronts in the shopping plaza, six months since the store sold its last morsel of food.

A new tenant isn't in sight, but village officials remain optimistic. The Dominick's building is caught in limbo as Cerberus Capital Management negotiates to close on Safeway, which ran Dominick's and owns that building. That deal could be finalized later this year.

Jeff Cook, Frankfort’s development services director, told journalist Susan DeMar Lafferty it's unlikely another grocery store will fill the 75,000-square-foot space. Cook said it's more likely to be subdivided. It's also unlikely a new tenant will need zoning changes on the property, so the village may not have much of a say in what goes into the building.

The rest of the plaza is owned by Inland Commercial Real Estate.

"They seem to be confident that it is a good site and will get filled," Cook said.
