Evilena's Red Dresser: Proving Color is the Spice of Life

In addition to its consignment treasures, Evilena's offers a colorful workshop that inspires and instructs

With the weather finally breaking, many Frankfort residents are feeling the itch to hit their spring cleaning lists.

Some are tackling dust bunnies in hard to reach places; others are switching out cold weather clothes for shorts and t-shirts that were too long in storage or the backs of dresser drawers.

There are also those who use spring as an excuse to purge home decor items and furniture. These are the people who are looking for more than fresh baseboards and organized closets. They are seeking an inspirational change, perhaps down to the walls.

Evilena's Red Dresser in Frankfort is the perfect place for the broad stroke, big brush kind of spring cleaner.

Open for more than a year and a half, owner Jan Sabey runs her upscale consignment shop with an eye for the traditional to the eclectic. Clients can bring in their great-condition treasures and make a bit of money once they are sold.  Once sold, items go on to bless other homes -- perhaps a college student's first apartment or a young couple's first home.

"Evilena's is  great place to find yourself a little something for that corner table or a unique, one-of-a-kind gift, or even a small collector's piece you have been searching for forever," says Sabey. "Our inventory changes every single day."

The high turnover makes for an exciting shopping experience. The chance your item will be there the next time you pop in is a bit of a gamble. Some customers admit this is part of the fun.

There are other consignment shops in the south suburbs; however, Sabey sets herself apart by playing host to a myriad of workshops and guest presenters in her store.

This month is no exception. And with all of those ninja decor purgers out there, this one will inspire them to take a fresh look at not just their furniture and knick knacks but even the walls, drapes and perhaps even those summer clothes they just unearthed.

On Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m., Evilena's is proud to have Catherine Ashton of Sacred Spaces Interiors in to present, "Colors for Our Homes & Moods."

Ashton is quite the Renaissance woman. An interior artist and designer, therapist and yoga instructor, she has also been a Feng Shui consultant for more than 20 years. Her approach to design is truly holistic and inspiring.

Sabey -- always eager to encourage new ideas and workshops for her customers -- welcomed Ashton's idea for this workshop.

"Catherine is just an amazing woman. She has so much experience. I was thrilled to have her."

For a $10 fee, workshop attendees will learn about the basic effects of color on our moods -- in our home and elsewhere. You may be surprised to find certain colors in your immediate environment, stimulate your appetite, tire you out or cause relational strife.

To pre-register, call Sabey at (815) 464-4426. She -- or any of her staff members -- will be glad to take down your name and reserve a seat for you.

As always, Evilena's is looking ahead to the summer and an exciting pool of event ideas is stirring already. The best way to keep yourself up to date is to sign up for event details at Evilena's website or check them out on Facebook.
