On Tuesday, April 10, during Lincoln-Way East High School's spring break, sophomore Molly Noonan and friends Heather Lorenca and Katie Shaw have organized local version of Tom's Shoes "One Day without Shoes" event. LWE staff members Chris Mroczek, Eric Nush and Katie Meader are helping the trio plan.
The awareness event will be held on the north end of the school property near the garden. Participants are invited to come at any time between 1 and 4:30 p.m. to kick off their shoes (literally) and show support for the millions of children around the world who go without shoes. According to the Tom's Shoes website, many of these children are susceptible to injury and disease without proper footwear. Some are even banned from school if they don't wear shoes. Tom's Shoes engages daily in a charitable outreach where for each pair of Tom's Shoes purchased, a pair is donated to a child in need.
Noonan said she first heard about the One Day event last year, but it was after it had happened. This year, she and her friends decided to be proactive and sponsor their own local version because she thinks the cause is a worthy one. For more information, contact noonand@sbcglobal.net.
