Army Cpl. Robert Kunz, 23, found out just how much his family--as well as Frankfort residents--missed him.
Members of the Soldiers Guardian Angels and the community turned out Sunday afternoon for a homecoming celebration to honor Kunz, who returned from a yearlong tour in Iraq. The event was a surprise; Kunz and his wife, Heather, were told they were celebrating the 81st birthday of Kunz's grandfather, Robert Dannowitz. In fact, the homecoming also honored Dannowitz, who was a sergeant in the Marines during the Korean War.
The welcome celebration began with a flag line in the parking lot of . From there, Kunz and his wife followed a police and motorcycle escort to for a private family party.
Kunz recently enrolled in the Universal Technical Institute in Glendale Heights and enlisted in the Army National Guard.
