The Winners of Frankfort’s Amateur Rib Cook Off

Bragging rights for the tastiest recipes served up at Frankfort's Annual Amateur Rib Cook Off contest go to a teams from Frankfort and Oak Forest.

Frankfort's Annual Amateur Rib Cook Off was a rib-lovers delights. Amateur chefs with their own special sauce came out in force Aug. 3.

From 1-3 p.m. rib lovers visited the area around Breidert's Village Green, Kansas and White Streets, tasting a variety of homemade ribs. The tasty slabs of barbecue ribs were served up with side dishes.  

Close to 600 rib lovers crowded downtown Frankfort, said Mary Canino, community relations director for the Village of Frankfort. Fourteen contestants from Frankfort, New Lenox, Tinley Park, Oak Forest, Mokena and surrounding areas used special spices and sauces to perfect the ideal rib for the cook-off.  

The event was co-sponsored benefit the Jaycees and Lions Club organizations and serves as a fundraiser for their organizations.

Live music was provided by Marty “Big Dog” Mercer, who entertained the crowd with blues from the Breidert Green stage.

The bragging rights for the best grilled ribs went to:  


  • 9 Piggies Barbecue from Frankfort—1st Place 
  • Metalli-Que from Mokena—2nd Place
  • S’Mokena Barbaque from New Lenox—3rd Place
  • South Side Pit Men from Oak Forest—Crowd Pleaser Award

The judges were: Michael Papandrea of Parmesans Wood Stone Pizza, 10235 W. Lincoln Highway; Tom Ridings of Smokey Barque Restaurant, 20 Kansas St. and Dan McGee of Dan McGee Restaurant and Catering, 9975 W. Lincoln Highway.
