Super Sunday Offers Cars, Concerts, Canned Goods and a Country Market

The Frankfort Car Club's members-only auto show headlines Sunday's event on Breidert Green, along with Elvis impersonator Dave Thomas and The Meteors.

After unpredictable summer weather ruined two Frankfort Car Club car shows back in the late 1990s, the group decided they needed an alternative to their 25 year tradition ... one that Mother Nature couldn't overpower.

"With a big car show, the investment is already in," said club member Larry Claypool. "We had already bought the trophies, made the flyers, did the dash plaques."

Yet the club lost a lot of money on the two shows, which involved car owners from around the region, when one got rained out and excessive heat kept people away from the other. The solution, the group decided, was to move to the format at the parking lot, which they've been doing for the past 10 years from May through August.

"It's so much eaiser, and we get the same amount of profit. It also doesn't matter if it rains because there's always next week," Claypool said.

But the group missed hosting its annual show, so several years ago they it forces with the and the Chamber of Commerce to create on July 24. The day begins with the Frankfort running its normal hours from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Then from 3-6 p.m., the Frankfort Car Club puts on a members-only show for the public, with a bit of a catch. Visitors are asked to bring non-perishable items to fill the trunks of the cars. Donations will be given to the .

"For this show the hoods will be closed and the trunks open," Claypool said. "Last year, we had seven trunks full of food and $229 in cash donations."

This year, the club's goal is to fill 10 trunks with food and collect $500 in cash to give to the pantry. At the July 17 Concerts on the Green, club members passed out cloth shopping bags, courtesy of Hagerty Insurance, to remind people to bring them back full on July 24.

On Super Sunday, visitors will not only enjoy classic cars but classic music, too. Frankfort Elvis impersonator Dave Thomas will arrive in a vintage Cadillac and take the stage from 5-6 p.m. "Elvis" will be followed by The Meteors, who will play songs from the '50s and '60s from 6:30-8 p.m. as the regular act.

"We encourage everyone to come down and enjoy great entertainment, classic cars and help a worthwhile cause at the same time,” said Ron Bernier, president of the Frankfort Car Club.
