New Lenox Sun Dog Day Afternoon

A reader captured an atmospheric phenomenon with her camera Monday.

Reader Anjelica Martini sent us this great photo Monday night and was kind enough to explain what it was she caught with her camera.

"Today my father and I were driving to Silver Cross Hospital and we saw this strange thing in the sky," Martini said. "I posted it on Facebook around 8 a.m. and later come to find out that's it's a sun dog. The most amazing thing I've ever seen!"

We had never heard of sun dogs before so we went to Google and found out they are mock suns or parhelia, which "are a pair of brightly colored spots, one on either side of the sun."

So that's good to know. Thanks for the photo!
