Gearing Up For Summer: 7 Things to Know About Frankfort Park District

Splash Park opens this weekend and park district staff wants the community to know other cool things available this summer.

Now that summer is finally just around the corner, the staff at  want you to know there is a ton of stuff to see and do around the parks.

"We really want to get people out to the parks," said Stacy Proper, parks superintendent of recreation. "We have things to do for adults and families."

The Splash Park opens this weekend, just in time for Memorial Day holiday.

Just in case you aren't aware of some of the possibilities, Patch has put together "7 Things to Know about Frankfort Park District":

  1. Adults can have fun, too - There are adult programs to choose from. Classes include photography, dog training and health screenings. The district also offers day and overnight trips for seniors.

  • There's a dog park - If you've never been to Bark Park, Sauk Trail and 80th Avenue, your chance is coming soon. The members-only park opens this weekend as well and offers a chance for man (or woman) and dog to run free.

  • The Fourth of July Celebration is going to rock - Chicago's B 96 - 96.3 FM street crew will be at the event, as well as a live band. There fest starts at 5 p.m. at Main Park, 200 S. Locust, and will also feature inflatables, carnival games and a beanbag tournament.

  • Preschool fun - During the school year, programs for youngsters are available before and after school; during the summer, classes such as Wiggles and Giggles and Tiny Tot Summer Camp sessions are available.

  • There are athletic programs for kids - It's not just about arts and crafts and summer camp — kids can enjoy baseball, basketball and flag football camps, based on their age.

  • The park district is technologically savvy - A recently revamped website plus a Facebook page means community members can constantly stay up to date on district happenings.

  • Two words: Fort Frankfort - Fort Frankfort, a wooden wonder designed for kids to slip in and out of tunnels, towers and a sandbox filled with toys was named by Family Time Magazine as one of the 10 best parks in the area. Fort Frankfort is in , at 80th Avenue between Laraway Road and Sauk Trail.

    Bonus: Ok, we've added one. Park facilities are also available for rental with classrooms, gymnasium and Founders Room for groups of 5-150.
