Janet Nush: Get to Know Frankfort Patch's Editor for the Day

The preschool teacher and mother of five talks about the stories she assigned and why she wouldn't give up her day job to be editor.

Earlier this month, I asked readers to apply to be Frankfort Patch Editor for a Day for the Leap Day this Leap Year. All they had to do was tell me why I should choose them. After going through the applications, I picked Janet Nush. Her duties: to assign me stories about the people and parts of Frankfort that don't normally get covered. Also, she and I will be holding "office hour" of sorts from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at . Come by and say hi to the Janet and talk to her about the stories, why likes Frankfort or anything else on your mind. You can talk to me, too, but I'm probably not nearly as interesting.

Also, I want to know what you thought of this idea. Share your opinions in the comments section or e-mail me at joev@patch.com. Plus, you can tell me if you'd like to be a future Editor for a Day.

Now read on, as Janet explains her story selections for Feb. 29. Keep checking in all day to read these stories on the site.

--Joe Vince, the Frankfort Patch editor the rest of the year

Hello, Readers:

Find out what's happening in Frankfortwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

I have been selected to be your Frankfort Patch Editor for the Day (don’t worry, Joe is still around and will be back tomorrow). I would like to take a few minutes to introduce myself and tell you a little bit about me.

My name is Janet Nush. I’ve been married for 27½ years to Keith. We were
blessed with five wonderful children: twins Aaron and Chad; Eric; Bryon; and Brittany. We also have two wonderful daughter-in-laws, Stephanie and Sabrina, and a brand new grandson, Joshua. I am a graduate of Olivet Nazarene University with a degree in early childhood/elementary education. I currently work at the Mokena Park District as a preschool teacher and love it!

As Frankfort Patch Editor for the Day, my job was to send Joe on four
different assignments. That was a hard job for me! I had to decide on four
different stories. So lets see how well I did.

EDITOR FOR THE DAY STORY:

The first assignment involved four of my favorite things: church, school, park districts and family. Ever wonder what would happen if you take school officials, Pastors, and park district staff, put them together in a room, have them brainstorm and work together? What would the results be?? Well, it turns out to be the BEST EVENT in the Lincoln-Way area for families for the past 15 years! It’s the Community Wide Asset Celebration or Family Faire. The date is Saturday, March 10, at . It begins with a free pancake breakfast from 9 to 10 a.m. Donations will be accepted to cover food expenses. I believe that pastors, ministers and church members are cooking the pancakes.

The festivities will until 1 p.m. in the L-W East gym. The park districts and schools have worked together and have come up with some great children’s games, crafts and live entertainment. The theme is centered around Dr. Seuss, and it’s going to be so much fun! The event is free, but attendees are asked to donate a small, new toy to The Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation. The toys are used to provide comfort and distraction from painful procedures to children who have been diagnosed with cancer.

There also a Battle of the Bands scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 9, at  for middle, junior high and high school students. This is a free event, too. Students must have their school ID for entrance and must be from one of the Lincoln-Way schools.

Wow! I just realized I gave a lot of the details on this great event. Joe's assignment is to cover anything I forgot or left out. Please plan on coming to this event. Your children will have a blast!!

EDITOR FOR THE DAY STORY: Road Commissioner Talks About His Job

My next assignment was for Joe to spotlight a hard-working individual in the Frankfort area. That was hard. We have so many people in the area that work hard, using their time and energy to make our Frankfort community great. I wanted to focus on someone who isn’t in the news a lot, so my choice was the Road Commissioner Bill Carlson. I find Bill not to be a typical road commissioner. He definitely does not have a “sit behind the desk all day” job. Did you know he actually works alongside his street maintenance crews? Joe talked to Bill about the job and what his crews do. I do want to thank Bill and his crews for the great job they do in our community.

EDITOR FOR THE DAY STORY:

My third assignment for Joe was a little different. As a teacher, I wanted him to walk away from this experience learning something new. That's why I asked him if he knew about the local Civil Air Patrol squadron. He replied no. Great! I gave him contact information for the commander, Aaron Angelini, and told him to find out what CAP is.

EDITOR FOR THE DAY STORY: Spotlight on Col. Michael Wingfield

Because education is very important to me, I decided to send him to a school for his last assignment. The school I chose was . I wanted to pick a teacher and group of hard-working students that really haven’t been in the news much.

My choice was Col. Michael Wingfield and his group of cadets from Junior ROTC. Joe’s assignment was to do a feature article on Wingfield and find out what the students learned and did in the program. [Editor-for-the-other-days note: Because of scheduling issues, I wasn't able to get an interview time with Wingfield by deadline. His story will appear in the near future. Thankfully, Janet didn't fire me because of this.--Joe Vince]

Thanks, Joe, for allowing me to fill your shoes and be the Frankfort Patch Editor for the Day! I’ve enjoyed talking with you and can’t wait to see how you do with your assignments! But like I said in the beginning, my real love is teaching little children, so I wouldn’t switch jobs with you for the world!

Have a great day, readers!

Janet Nush
