Family, Friends Send Off Frankfort Soldier in Style (Video)

Greg Prunsky, a student at Western Illinois University, was surprised by the village fire protection district, Soldiers Guardian Angels and Warrior Watch Riders at VFW Post 1493.

Bittersweet was the best way to describe the scene at on the evening of Monday, July 30. When soon-to-be-deployed U.S. Army National Guard reservist Greg Prunsky and his parents pulled into the post's parking lot, they were greeted by friends and family lined up with flags cheering.

Prunsky, a native, shook hands with the members of the Soldiers Guardian Angels and Warrior Watch Riders that helped organize the event before the rally began.

"The support out here is outstanding," said Prunsky, a Western Illinois University student majoring in law enforcement who joined the National Guard in 2008. He's part of a military police unit based at Fort Sheridan.

During the get-together a prayer was said by the dozens in attendance for Prunsky, and thanked several times for his soon-to-begin one-year service stint in Afghanistan.

As the mother of Specialist Gregory Prunsky, my husband and I were totally blown away by all the amazing support we received yesterday from everyone. The VFW helped turn this send off into an over-the-top, nothing held back celebration of showering our son with kindness. This is an emotional time for us and this shows how much his willingness to protect our great country means to everyone. We are so proud of him and wish to say thank you to the VFW Post 1493 of Frankfort and all it's members who have welcomed Greg and us with open arms into their family. The event was a turnout of family, teachers, coaches, Boy Scouts of Troop 270 past and present and friends who have known Greg since he was born. The many coaches who helped him learn how to be part of a "team", to his Cub Scout and Boy Scout leaders who furthered his knowledge and helped him achieve his Eagle award in 2008, all played a small part of his desire to stand and fight for our freedom that we, as Americans deserve. The whole day from the firefighters and fire trucks lining the VFW driveway to the Soldiers Guardian Angels and the Warrior Watch Riders standing with flags was totally amazing. Thank you to all, we are happy that you have our backs for the next year that Greg is gone and when he returns. Marti, Ed and Specialist Greg Prunsky
